PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Rooted. Still rising.
The story behind it
The palmyra palm – Panai (பனை) in Tamil – is the state tree of Tamil Nadu and shapes the landscape of Jaffna. It is also called Karpaga Tharu, “the tree that gives everything”: fruit, nungu, palm sugar (karupatti), leaves for roofs and baskets – and the leaves on which Tamil literature was written for centuries.
The panai grows in dry, poor soil, survives drought and storms and can live for over a hundred years. Its roots run deep – just like those of a people who have grown anew all over the world.
The design
- Front: small “THIS IS TAMIL” logo with தமிழ் on the chest
- Back: “PALMYRA” – a palmyra palm heavy with fruit before a red sun. Below: “Rooted. Still rising.”

THE TREE THAT GIVES EVERYTHING
DEEP ROOTS.
DRY SOIL.
AND STILL TALL.
The palmyra palm – Panai – grows where little else can. It gives fruit, sugar, wood and the leaves on which Tamil literature was written for centuries. For many Tamils, especially from Jaffna, it is a symbol of home and resilience.
