KEEZHADI
On the banks of the Vaigai near Madurai, archaeologists uncovered a brick-built Sangam-era town: ring wells, drainage, Roman trade pottery — and potsherds scratched with Tamil-Brahmi letters. Carbon dates reach back as far as 580 BCE.
c. 300 BCE

THE FIRST LETTERS
Tamil-Brahmi inscriptions carved into the rock shelters of Tamil Nadu are among the oldest written records in South Asia. The same language is still spoken today.
1st c. BCE – 5th c. CE

THE SANGAM POETS
2,381 poems of love (akam) and of war and kings (puram). Among them: “Yaadhum oore, yaavarum kelir” — every town is our home, everyone is our kin.
c. 500 CE

THIRUKKURAL
Valluvar’s 1,330 couplets on virtue, wealth and love — seven words each. Translated into more than 57 languages and admired by Tolstoy and Gandhi.
1010 CE

THE CHOLA AGE
Rajaraja Chola completes the Brihadisvara temple in Thanjavur. Chola fleets sail the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia. The Great Living Chola Temples are UNESCO World Heritage today.
1215 – 1619

THE JAFFNA KINGDOM
In the north of the island Tamils call Eelam (ஈழம்), the Aryacakravarti kings rule an independent Tamil kingdom until the Portuguese conquest.
1983 – 2009

WAR, LOSS, EXILE
Decades of war in Sri Lanka. The Jaffna Public Library — with more than 97,000 books and manuscripts — burned in 1981. Tens of thousands of lives lost, more than 800,000 people displaced. A generation carried Eelam with them into the world.
2004

FIRST CLASSICAL LANGUAGE
Tamil becomes the first language legally recognised as a Classical Language of India.

A GLOBAL PEOPLE
More than 120 million Tamils worldwide — most of them in India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, Mauritius and South Africa. Official in India, Sri Lanka and Singapore. January is Tamil Heritage Month in Canada. And a new generation wearing its roots with pride.

THE ISLAND

ஈழம்

Eelam is the old Tamil name for the island of Sri Lanka — and for many of us, the name of home. From the Jaffna Kingdom to the Tamil towns of the north and east, it is a place of temples, palmyra palms, lagoons and fierce pride in learning.

The war from 1983 to 2009 took lives, homes and libraries. It scattered families across the world. But it could not take the language, the songs or the memory. Today the children of Eelam are designers, doctors, artists and founders — and they wear their roots.

TAMIL LIVES
EVERYWHERE.

More than 120 million Tamils live across the world — the vast majority in India and Sri Lanka, and in long-rooted communities in Malaysia, Singapore, Mauritius, Réunion and South Africa. Traders sailed with the Cholas to Southeast Asia, workers crossed oceans in the 1800s, families fled war in Eelam. Wherever we landed, we kept the language, the food, the music — and each other.
