PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Across oceans. Through time.
The story behind it
Arikamedu, near today’s Puducherry, was a trading port more than 2,000 years ago, connecting the Tamil coast with the Roman Empire. Greek and Roman sailors knew it as “Poduke”.
Archaeologists found Roman amphorae for wine and olive oil and fine tableware from Arezzo in Italy. In the other direction went fine cotton textiles and exquisite beads of glass and semi-precious stones made in Arikamedu itself. Tamils were connected to the world long before anyone spoke of globalisation.
The design
- Front: small “THIS IS TAMIL” logo with தமிழ் on the chest
- Back: “ARIKAMEDU” – an ancient sailing ship riding high waves before a red sun. Below: “Across oceans. Through time.”
