PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Our first home.
The story behind it
“Amma” (அம்மா) is one of the first words a Tamil child speaks. The poet Avvaiyar opens her work Kondrai Vendhan with the line “அன்னையும் பிதாவும் முன்னறி தெய்வம்” – “Mother and father are the first gods we know.”
Before we know a house, a city or a country, we know our mother’s arms. That is where we learn our language, our songs and our stories. This shirt is dedicated to all mothers – especially those who pass their culture on to their children in a new country.
The design
- Front: small “THIS IS TAMIL” logo with தமிழ் on the chest
- Back: “AMMA” – a mother in a sari, jasmine in her hair, tenderly holding her child before a red sun. Below: “Our first home.”

FAMILY IS EVERYTHING
OUR FIRST
HOME HAS
A NAME.
In Tamil culture, family is at the centre – and the mother, Amma, most of all. She passes on language, songs, food and stories. Especially in the diaspora, it is often mothers who make sure children in Zurich, London or Toronto speak Tamil and know where they come from.
